Project overview

Research has shown that people in the age category; 24 to 34 years, mainly women relapse annually from depression. About 4.2% of men versus 6.2% of women. This shows that people who have depression have a high risk of becoming depressed again. About half a million people in the Netherlands have suffered from depression.

My Contributions

I was the only designer on this project. I was involved in everything from defining the brand to personas, interviews, creating wireframes, to creating the final UI designs and conceptualizing the platform.

How does an aftercare process work?

Research shows that the risk of a depression relapse is very likely for people who have had depression before. About half a million people in the Netherlands suffer or have suffered from depression. When people recover from depression, half of the people end up in depression again. Research shows that about 50 to 75% suffer from depression again. These numbers are even higher if someone has already had more than two relapses. In this case, the chance of a relapse is very likely even in 90% of the cases.

Risk factors in depression

People who suffer from recurrent depression have a gradual decline in mood. This may be due to certain risk factors such as; loneliness, insomnia, inactive, no social contacts and/or a new phase of life. Over time, these complaints will increase. Research shows that many themselves are left with their problems, causing them more; experiencing sadness, having sleeping problems, knowing fears and not knowing how to deal with these feelings. Research has shown that the problem, recurrent depression, occurs when someone has not started a follow-up care program.

Research shows that about 500,000 people in the Netherlands suffer or have suffered from depression.

The percentage of people who have a relapse after recovering from depression.

Every year there is a risk of a very increasing relapse of depression.

Every year there is a risk of a very increasing relapse of depression.

Target audience

Men and women between the ages of 24 and 34 who suffer from recurrent depressive feelings or who have relapsed from depression.

Design Challenge

“How can an interactive solution, in men and women aged 24 to 34, who have recurrent feelings of depression, offer support and information to reduce the risk of relapse and know how to act when depressed feelings return.”

Concept

A prevention in which the user can draw up a digital plan to prevent risk factors at an early stage. It gives the user insight to prevent a relapse. With a functionality in which the user can view information about; how to deal with depression, what are the risk factors etc.

Branding

The branding of the concept consists of colors, typography, logo, app icon and other corporate identity elements. The branding of the concept provides a visual appearance of the product.

Wireframing

After I defined the concept and various solutions and which screens we need, I started with wireframes. To better map the experience, and explore more detail on a screen-by-screen level.

Final UI

Below are the final screens designed for the final product. Between the wireframes and the elaboration of the concept, there is the testing part in which different designs of screens are tested for functionality. The final UI shows the final screens and explanations of the screens.

Introduction

An introduction to the application so that the user knows which functionalities are possible within the application. A tour of the platform.

Stories

Research shows that people no longer know very well what exactly they have done during and / or after their treatment. To solve this problem, the user can choose answers from stories. Stories are automated answers, from an expert point of view, that they can indicate as answers. This gives the user an extra reminder and / or new thoughts on how the user acted during or after a treatment.

Refreshing information

Another functionality within the application is to provide information. My user research shows that the target group needs relevant information when recurring feelings arise. Through a functionality called; refresh, the user can read information or listen in whatever context one occurs. The information can provide assistance to the user so that they continue to closely monitor knowledge of depression. To interact more with the user, the user can unlock new information when they have completed certain information. The user can receive notifications of new content so that they remain connected to the application.

Reading information

My research shows that about 40% of the people who suffer and / or have had recurrent depression are not well informed and want to look for the correct information. In this flow of the process, I made several iterations about how to best inform a user.

Listening to information

With “refresh” the user can easily read back or listen to information about mental health. The user can find various topics such as; the aftercare process for a depression, what is a depression, 10 tips practical tips to combat depression and information about the use of medication and types of medication.

Personal surroundings

The functionality offers the possibility to the user to create a personal environment. User research shows that it is a need and interest of the user. The user values privacy and considers this important when using the application. The application offers the privacy conditions, and the possibility to set a biometric password so that the user can create a personal environment. The interaction color palette allows the user to adjust various colors in the application so that it can be used according to his own taste.

Mood Slider

My test results show that there is almost to no interaction with the user around the application, after completing the relapse prevention. To change this, I came up with a number of notifications. The mood meter monitors the user’s emotion. After completing the form, the user will see an action that can be performed such as; Do you need some refreshment information, or take a look at your relapse prevention?
